If you like your mockbusters literally swimming in cheese, and God knows I do (generally Velveeta), then might I recommend the latest made-for-the-SyFy channel movie, Battle Of Los Angeles? Now you’re probably asking, “Don’t you mean Battle: Los Angeles, that big budget, Hollywood blockbuster that opened at number one last weekend?” Absolutely not, my mainstream-movie-going sheep person. I mean Battle Of Los Angeles, the latest and greatest mockbuster from The Asylum featuring former Nickelodeon child actor, Kel Mitchell, the other half of Keenan and Kel. Written and directed by Mark Atkins, this movie kicked some ass as it premiered on SyFy a couple of weekends ago and drew an unprecedented 2.18 million viewers.
It’s easily one of the best action films The Asylum has ever produced and I was particularly impressed by Nia Peeples, who not only looks smoking hot in her tight blue jumpsuit but can actually take down an alien spaceship by stabbing it with her samurai sword!! Indeed some awesome and cheesy fun! The only thing that would have made it better would have been, perhaps, a bit more humor added to the dialogue. I personally would have loved to hear Kel say, “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger. Can I take your order?” but alas, it was just not meant to be. Probably would have been a tough fit, given the subject matter.
Battle Of Los Angeles is available on dvd from The Asylum now. Check it out for a night filled with the sort of guilty pleasure only a SyFy/Asylum movie can deliver.

I just put the finishing touches on the last piece I was working on for the 44th Annual Hawley Art Show and not a moment too soon. Entries are being accepted this weekend at the Hawley Community Center and the show itself is actually going on next weekend, March 31, April 1, 2 & 3, 2011. Way up top there is the one I just finished, split into two pieces so you can see all the detail work. It’s called Destroy, Create, Mutate and is about 44 inches across. Beneath that is a piece that I actually made for the TRASHED show that Punchgut and I did at DK Gallery last year and is called If You See Any Strangers Make Sure To Tell Them I Said Hello.

Lawdy! By the stringy beard of Beelzebub, I have to level with you…I’ve watched a lot of horror movies over the years, but nothing creeps me out more than stories of demonic possession. Actually, watching that 20/20 interview with Charlie Sheen the other night runs a pretty close second but the shocking case of Anneliese Michel still edges it out by a hair. So grab yourself a big bowl of pea soup and allow me to fill you in on the grisly details.
Annelies: The Exorcist Tapes is the shocking account of this famous case compiled from what is supposedly actual videotape and film recordings from over 76 exorcisms. Now whether or not you choose to believe the footage is real or a fiendishly clever marketing ploy by The Asylum for another found-footage scarefest (they wouldn’t do THAT to us now would they?), I think you may want to sleep with the lights on after this one. Some of the imagery is quite freakily creeptastic as is the accompanying documentary on Anneliese Michel and the validity of the Exorcist tapes. Check out the trailer
